The Teal Pumpkin Project encourages homeowners to offer non-food treats for trick-or-treaters with food allergies—nearly six million in the U.S.

Having a food allergy can be an isolating experience for children, and sometimes they face bullying, notes Meagan W. Shepherd, MD, founder of West Virginia-based Shepherd Allergy. “Children often miss out on fun times like birthday parties and trick-or-treating because they fear exposure to a potentially deadly food allergen,” Shepherd says.
