As soon as the fall season hits, many homeowners jump to decorate their homes with pumpkins, gourds, and other seasonal staples.
While whimsical and perfect for the season, for some people, it might be a better idea to keep the pumpkins outside.

“Mold spores may already be on these fall decor items and once they make their way indoors, warm temperatures and moisture can promote quick mold growth, especially if there are already nicks or soft spots,” Dr. Meagan W. Shepherd, a board-certified allergist and immunologist and founder of Shepherd Allergy and The Allergy Aesthetic in Huntington, WV explained to Realtor.com®.
According to Shepherd, mold exposure can trigger classic allergy symptoms like nasal drainage and congestion, itchy, watery eyes, and sneezing. For asthma patients, mold spores can worsen wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath.
“Even in people without allergies, mold can cause respiratory irritation. In my clinic, I often see patients who aren't technically allergic to mold but still feel its irritating effects,” says Shepherd.
